Edmonton is where BioWare, the studio behind Baldur's Gate, Mass Effect and Dragon Age, was founded and is still based. For a city its size it has an unusually strong games scene, and long winters that give everyone a reason to stay in and play.

Edmonton Expo runs each autumn and brings comics, games and cosplay together. Whyte Avenue in Old Strathcona has board game cafés, bars and comic shops, and the University of Alberta's gaming clubs are among the most active in the country. West Edmonton Mall, once the largest shopping centre in the world, has arcades and attractions for a different kind of afternoon.

Around Edmonton

Edmonton members live in Old Strathcona, Oliver, Downtown, Mill Woods and the newer suburbs, as well as in St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove and Leduc. The LRT runs north to south through the centre and to the university, and the river valley's trails link much of the city on foot and by bike. Calgary is three hours south down the QEII.

With BioWare in town and a strong university gaming scene, Edmonton has more than its share of people who love long, story-heavy games. In summer, the Fringe festival in Old Strathcona, one of the largest in North America, gives you an evening out that is not gaming at all.
